Involvement Fair – Reflection 1

One of the most helpful events I went to this semester was the involvement fair. There was so many organizations and clubs I would have never known about, nor join if it wasn’t for the involvement fair. We walked around and they all had a table with information, pictures, and most importantly, free goodies. Members were there to talk to you about what the club was about and how much they enjoyed it. It was nice hearing a student perspective on everything. When I was there I signed up for many of the organizations including; environmental club, Big Blue Buddies, My College Buddy, etc. After signing up for more than 10 clubs I went to the first few meetings in all of them and realized some of them weren’t for me. I’ve continued participating in a few of them that I enjoy a lot.  The involvement fair gave me the opportunities to pursue activities that will be able to help my professional career. I am now a part of National Student Nurses Association. This organization is for any nursing student interested. It has helped me become aware of what nursing school will be like and all the struggles that I will have to go through. It also helps younger nursing students be able to get to know senior nursing students who will be able to help you with whatever it is that you need. Due to NSNA, I was able to have a connection to get a job at the hospital for second semester. This will be a huge impact on my nursing process by being able to get a hospital experience. I am so happy I went to this event held on campus. I know it has helped me out and many people I know. Without going to this event I would be a part of and know as many people as I do now. The involvement fair also lead me to someone I have become really close with. She is the girl I go and see every week as a mentor. I am grateful I had this experience to help someone out, and in the end it has helped me out the most. Being a mentor makes you realize how different I have grown up compared to how other kids grow up. It is very nice being able to help people out, however I would have never even known about it without the involvement fair. 

Golf Meet – Reflection 2

The golf tournament here in Decatur was another event I went to. Golf really isn’t a sport I would normally go and watch, and I was very out of my element out on the course. The reason why I went to the golf meet was because one of my best friends play golf for Millikin. She has been my best friend since elementary school and I have been watching her play since high school, however it is a much bigger experience watching her play for college. Since she plays gold and I am her roommate I have gotten to know her teammates as well. I quickly started becoming friends with them. If I am going to be honest, golf is nothing all too fun to go and watch, but when you are going out there to support your friends it is a whole different experience. Watching your friends go out there and kick ass on the course makes the meet worth it. I have learned how much supporting your friends means to others. Some people have never had their friends go out and watch them before, and it is the support that matters. Although some of them love the supports, others hate it and get nervous knowing anyone is watching. It an awesome experience knowing many student athletes. Even though I don’t participate in any sports, it is nice being able to see others try so hard and succeed at what they love. 

Progressive Dinner – Reflection 3

The Progressive Dinner was an opportunity for girls to see what sorority life was like. We went to all three of the house to tour them and to get to talk to some of the girls in the sorority. I am glad that I went to this because it gave me the opportunity to see what it was really about and whether or not I wanted to pursue rushing in the future. I had no idea what to expect when walking in and it was quite different than what I expected. When we walked into the first house they were all singing and I had no idea how to react, however I soon learned that all the houses did it and it was a normal thing. We all got paired up with a member of the house for a little bit of small talk for them to get to know us and for us to learn more about the experience and how they like it. The biggest surprise about the houses where how the sleeping was set up. Most of the houses have it bunk style where all the girls sleep in one room. When I first heard about this I was very skeptical, but after talking to some of the girls, they say it’s not nearly as bad as we think. It was also nice being able know there are a few girls in each house who are also nursing majors who will be going through the same things as me. During this process we talked to at least three girls in each house so I was able to meet a lot of new people. It was a nice opportunity for Millikin and the sorority houses to set up an event like this for all of the girls interested before rushing. You really have no idea what to expect before doing it and you don’t just want to go through the whole recruiting process just to realize you don’t like it. It also showed all of us what each house philosophy is. Their philosophy is the biggest part of their house and is the reason why a lot of girls choose a specific one. During the whole process I learned that I like Tri Delta a lot due to their philosophy which working with St. Judes Hospital. It was a great event for everyone looking to rush when coming back to school in January. I am happy I went to the event to meet new people and get a new experience. 

Talent Show – Reflection 4

The talent show was a fun event. I expected just a talent show with some random and crazy acts, but it turns out Millikin has many amazing people with great talents. I went with a group of friends who I had just met and had an amazing time. While I was there I had also met some people with great energy when cheering everyone on. It was great to see what all of the students have to offer. This event made me realize how good all of the shows and concerts they put on must be. All of the contestants had a lot of competition due to the fact of how good everyone is. At first I didn’t really want to go to the talent show, but we got offered extra credit if we went and I am so happy I ended up going. Everyone should go to the talent show to at least experience it for the first time. It also makes me wish I had a talent. Another reason why it was a cool event was because it made me realize some of the clubs I didn’t even know existed like the hip-hop dance club. They made a good performance with a big group of people. From this event I learned that I should try everything out. If I wouldn’t have gone to this I would have no  idea what I am missing out on and would have never gotten the opportunity to meet some of the people that I did. I also wouldn’t have been able to get the extra credit. Once again you always have to try something at least once and if you don’t like it then you don’t have to do it again, but because I went to this I will be continuing to go as long as they have it. There was everything from fast singing, dancing, and amazing singing to hear. One of the girls who performed had previously been on the voice. The talent show is an event Millikin University hosts that everyone to go to at least once in their years here. 

Phall Phest – Reflection 5

The Pi Phi Phall Phest was an event held by the sorority Ph Phi. I was a really cool event that I ended up meeting a lot of new people. I already knew some of the members in Pi Phi, which was the reason I ended up going to this event, but during the event I ended up meeting a lot more people then I would have expected. It was a lot more of a social event than I thought. There was so much food and entertainment there. Some of the entertainment was performers singing, and oh my god were they good. It was awesome to be able to go to one of the events a sorority puts on to know what it’s like if I were to be in one eventually. The vibes and the atmosphere were amazing to be around as well as the people. They had an abundance of food as well as animals. That might sound weird but what better way to get people to come than seeing cute animals. They had mini horses there for everyone to pet and I fell in love with them instantly. The whole event was just a feel good vibe. Pi Phi put on an amazing performance of singers for all of the students and faculty who went to the event. It was a much larger event than I expected. When I first heard about it I thought it was just going to be a small things with people coming and going and eating some small snacks while there, however, I thought wrong. I originally only bought the tickets to help support the sorority, but I am very happy I went. This sounds the same for many of the events I went to but going to these events that I wasn’t too thrilled about going to made me realize I need to come out of my comfort zone when it comes to new things. In the end I always liked the events I went to whether I doubted it or not. This was another one. Pi Phi put on such a fun afternoon of things I didn’t know I would experience in college. This is another event I will make sure to come to as long as they still have it.
